My friend and I were looking for an adventure within the Aviano area. We had both heard about the Grotte del Caglieron about 35 minutes from Pordenone in Vittorio Veneto, Italy and decided it was the right kind of adventure for a low key afternoon. We followed the GPS until we got pretty close and then began to follow the brown signs. Although the trail is very clearly labeled and you literally drive past it into the parking lot we managed to walk straight up two wrong hills for about 20 minutes each before getting to the right spot. The trail it's self is really cool; wooden and a bit rickety, it leads you down and around waterfalls and through giant caves; I felt like I was in a scene from Indiana Jones (or at least the Disney ride...I've never actually seen the movie). To walk the entire trail takes about 30-40 minutes depending on how much you stop. It's not very strenuous and can be done in regular shoes (though I would probably wear close toed shoes). At the bottom of the trail there is even a little restaurant/caffe where you can get a drink or a snack. We had a delicious local prosecco for 1.50€ a glass. I definitely recommend this if you are in the area and are looking for a cool, easy nature activity.
Tourist Office Hours: Open every day 9:30 to 12:30 and 15:00 to 18:00 (I think the actual trail is open 24 hours a day)
Address: Via grotte del Caglieron, 31010 Fregona TV, Italy
