I lived in Italy for 2.5 years, I love gelato! I had low expectations for gelato anywhere outside of Italy being very good. Goodness I was wrong! Turns out that the heavy Italian influence in Buenos Aires, Argentina makes it a little gelato hot-bed! There are so many great gelato shops! Here are a few I visited, including my top shop and flavor picks:
Occo: If you make it here I recommend the lemon meringue, it may have been a seasonal flavor but if they have it you should go for that.
Freddo: A decent gelato shop for a chain. If you go try the dulce de leche with brownies; it’s good for a chain but the other places are better.
Cadore: This gelato shop was by far my favorite! It even made my list of best dulce de leche treats in South America (read about it here). Get the Swiss chocolate and dulce de leche gelato, they are magic!
Rapa Nui: This Recoleta gelato shop was probably my second favorite in Buenos Aires. Go for the raspberry, it was super delicious and had I not had Cadore I would have thought it was the best.
The Creme Lab: This place is more ice cream than gelato. I ordered the peanut butter, it needed a bit more favor but they make it on the spot which is cool (literally).
