What did I choose to get SCUBA certified in Grand Cayman?
I had been wanting to get SCUBA certified for a while (ever since doing “Discover SCUBA” in Malta) and honestly Grand Cayman was the cheapest flight for the dates I had available. Little did I know that Grand Cayman is actually one of the best places in the world for SCUBA; that was enough to convince me, so I bought my tickets!
How much does it cost to get SCUBA certified in Grand Cayman?`
The PADI eLearning costs $185 USD for the Open Water online learning (but verify this on their website) and the actual dives cost $395 USD. Then you need to factor in flights, hotel, and meals. I think it is a fun vacation but if your only goal is to get basic certification there are probably cheaper (though wayyy less interesting) ways of doing this. If you want a full estimate of what you should plan to spend during your time in Grand Cayman check out this post. I did my diving through Cayman Turtle Divers and had a great experience, the prices may have changed so make sure to contact them directly for the most up to date info.
How difficult is it to get the SCUBA certification in Grand Cayman?
Honestly not it’s not super difficult to get SCUBA certified in Grand Cayman. Most of the harder part is done online through the PADI eLearning. Once I arrived in Grand Cayman it was relatively easy to get my SCUBA certification; Cayman Turtle Divers picked us up (and dropped us off) at our hotel, the tests were relatively easy (assuming you are in at least decent shape and can follow basic instructions with some patience), and the water was clear, warm, and easy to swim in. Plus, it was a ton of fun because once we arrived all of our lessons were in the actual ocean (the intro lessons were in a protected cove in the ocean).
What sorts of things might I see while getting my SCUBA certification in Grand Cayman?
While in Grand Cayman I saw lots of lovely colorful fish, a turtle, lots of turbine, some moray eels, a wreck, a reef shark, a barracuda, and an eagle ray! The reefs were so lovely, especially the ones we did off the boat. It really is a magical place to get dive certified! Unfortunately I just have a super cheap underwater camera so my ability to take solid pictures underwater was limited to the stuff more towards the top (because there is better lighting).
How was the overall experience of getting SCUBA certified in Grand Cayman?
Short answer: Fantastic! SCUBA diving is one of the coolest experiences I’ve had in my life! Grand Cayman has tons of cool stuff to see and the experts at Cayman Turtle Divers made me feel really safe and confident in the water. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in getting their SCUBA certification.
