First let me say it was kind of for free. I didn’t pay for the flight but I did pay for the credit card that got me there. But it was still a friggin’ steal, here’s how I did it:
A flight to Syracuse from Denver when I stetted looking 3 months out for my little brothers graduation was $480. Shoot dang that’s expensive. And since I didn’t purchase it right away it continued to climb…fast.
So I decided to do the credit card thing and book with miles.
American Airlines was (is still?) offering a Barclay’s card that gives 60,000 miles if you pay the $95 fee and make any purchase…I bought a coffee for $4 ($3 plus $1 tip because i’m not a jerk). So I paid $99 for 60,000 miles (and a delicious cup of coffee!).
Then I went into my American Airlines rewards portal and decided to splurge on first class. For 50,000 miles+$11.80 in taxes and fees I booked the exact flight I was wanting. Yes, 50,000 miles is way more than you would normally spend on a flight in the US but I was feeling fancy and miles are easy to get.
So basically I spent $110.80 for a round trip ticket in first class from Denver, CO to Syracuse, NY.
A super travel win. And I got to see my little brother graduate law school, another win.
Hope this helps you crush it in the travel game! Let me know in the comments section if you have favorite ways of saving on travel!
