I really like that Uruguay has it’s own culture of drinks even though it is such a small country. Here are a few essential local drinks you need to try if you find yourself in Montevideo!
Cafe “Galeano” at Cafe Brasilero: A coffee drink served with a stiff shot of amaretto and sweetened with dulce de leche and cream. It is a famous local drink and definitely worth a try if you are in Montevideo.
Grappa Miel: A honey grappa commonly served in Uruguay. I was able to try this on my free walking tour (a tour I definitely recommend) but you can try this by purchasing it in many shops or ordering it off a menu.
Medio y Medio: Popular in Montevideo especially with lunch medio y medio is a mix of Prosecco and white wine that you can try at almost any asado place.
Wine Tasting: Uruguay produces many of its own wines and they are definitely worth tasting. I recommend stopping at the Montevideo Wine Experience and letting one of the staff guide you through a tasting of local wines.
There you have it, a guide for how to try the local drinks famous in Montevideo, Uruguay!
