I had no idea what to expect while in Uruguay. I had done very little research and booked a ferry ticket only a couple of days before (to read more about how to take the ferry to Montevideo check out this post. I learned a lot about Uruguay on my quick (but very full) day trip there and here are some of the things I found most surprising:
Uruguay is super chill. The people are laid back and no one seems to be stressed out about anything.
The politicians just hang out around town. Because Uruguay is so chill the president (when in town) will just casually walk around or sit on a bench and read the newspaper. So crazy!
The average Uruguayan consumes 99 kilos of meat each year. So much meat!
Uruguay has a population of approximately 3.5 million people and 14 million cows…I guess that’s why they can eat so much meat.
Only 2% of the population are indigenous descendants. The story is pretty tragic but I suggest you go on a walking tour to hear the story.
Uruguay is one of the top countries in the world for civil liberties. They have legalized gay marriage, abortion, marijuana and many other things. All of this was surprising to me in a South American country.
Uruguay has no official religion. This might help explain the previous fact.
