Check Out Trivia Night at the CAC
This is a free event held almost every Wednesday at 6pm. You can have teams of up to ten people, and the winning team gets a $15 gift card to the CAC (scores compile quarterly and the overall 1st-3rd place winners get much larger gift certificates). It's a fun event if you want to go be a little bit nerdy (in a cool way)!
Go on an ODR Trip
ODR at Holloman has an impressive amount of trips. I was a part of an outdoor rockclimbing trip to the Organ Mountains and a float down the Rio trip. Both were great and I would recommend you check them out.
Go Rock Climbing at ODR
ODR has a little rock wall inside. On Wednesday nights you can pay $20 to get belay certified. With that certification you can climb for free (including rentals) for a whole year. Or if you aren't ready to commit to the $20 (which is a steal by the way) you can pay $3 for a day pass and just boulder or use the auto-belays. This is a great place to take up this hobby because it's so cheap and a super healthy thing to get into. Go get 'em!
Try the Ropes Course
Lots of shops will have team building at the ropes course but if your shop doesn't you can get eight friends together and sign up with ODR. I believe it's $20 per person but it's a fun experience to do at least once while you're at Holloman.
Attend a Fitness Class
The base gym is impressive in and of itself however there are a wide variety of classes you can take as well from yoga, to spin, to pilates. The classes are $3 or you can get a punch card for a month. I really enjoyed the yoga/pilates class I took.
Try Out the Bod Pod
Because I'm not military (or affiliated with the military in anyway) I was never able to do this personally but if you are looking to lose weight and want to get an idea of your fat to muscle ratio this is a great option. I have heard from friends that it is super encouraging to see body fat drop even if weight is staying the same. it seems like a rad tool to have on a health journey.
Play Racquetball at the Gym
I'm not a racquetball wizard but I still really enjoyed messing around on the court and attempting to play. The gym has all of the gear and if you don't know how to play just mess around or look up the rules online.
Make a Wood Project at the Wood Shop
Twice a week a class is offered at the Wood Shop that will allow you to be certified on all of the crazy wood shop equipment. Once you are certified the super helpful attendant will walk you through the steps for almost any wood project your heart desires (I was working on making corn hole).
Go to a Morale Event (like a concert)
FSS regularly hosts morale events. While in the Holloman area I was able to see a concert and participate in Alpha Warrior (with some of the ninjas from American Ninja Warrior) which was super fun.
Try 3D Printing
I never personally did this but I did watch several times while working from the library. There is a 3D printing club at the library and a man who is super passionate about it who will help you create a small 3D art piece of your own.
Fly a Drone
Outdoor Rec has several drones that they purchased and will teach you to race if you are into that kind of thing. Just call and ask to make sure they are running the program as it has been a bit off and on.
Go Cosmic Bowling
A fun way to spend a night with friends. They regular have bowling+drink+meal plans so be sure to ask.
Check Out the Planes
When you drive into base there are a bunch of planes in a tiny outdoor museum. Go and learn a bit about some of the planes that have been used at Holloman.
Every Saturday ODR runs paintball on base. If you are into paintball then this is a great option for you to try a game.
Attend a Wine and Paint Class
I never did this but I saw it advertised often. If you want to learn to paint while drinking (you supply the drinks) then check out the monthly FSS magazine to see when the next wine and paint night is happening. FSS also has several other trips and events that are worth checking out.
Do a Fun Run
The base gym holds (almost) monthly 5k fun runs. Go and get right and tight!
Play Around on the Ninja Obstacle Course
When Alpha Warrior came to Holloman in August 2018 they left a small ninja training facility out by the outdoor basketball court. You can try your hand at the obstacles and see if you are ready to be an American Ninja Warrior.
Attend the Airshow
This is Holloman's premier event! And your chance to check out the planes on base and watch a simulation of some of the stuff the pilots are trained to do. There are inflatables for the kids and lots of food/beverage booths. It's a fun event and worth checking out if you are in town.
Visit White Sands National Monument for Free (technically not on base)
If you are in the military you can get a free annual pass to all of our National Parks which will allow you to go to White Sands for free. Don't miss out on this opportunity!
