There is such a richness to the city of Trieste, this place is brimming history and culture. However, there are a few places (that although quite popular still today) have a way of making you feel like you are traveling back in time to a different era. Enjoy the magic and charm of these three recommendations for time-traveling in Trieste:
Early 1800s-Caffe Tommaseo:
Though it was built originally in 1830 and renovated in 1997 this place maintains an old time charm with its beautiful high ceilings and gorgeous white arches. After my first visit (of many) to Trieste I was making notes on the various coffee shops we visited and wrote next to this one "elegant in a way that seems to transport you back in time". Even now after having visited most of the historic caffes of Trieste I honestly think this might be my favorite place to sit and drink a "Capo" in Trieste (it's worth the extra euro for the experience).
Late 1800s-Castello di Miramare:
Having been to way too many castles I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It's location on the water makes for magical pictures and the inside decor has an old-time charm that beautifully blends much of it's eclectic history.
Early 1900s-The Trieste-Opicina Funicular:
Part tram part funicular with beautiful city views I definitely recommend this experience. Plus, the decor on the inside is wooden and very charming. For the best views sit in the direction facing down the hills. 1.55 euro for 75 minutes, 1.55 euro for an hour, trams come every 20 minutes.
